Following widespread complaints of severe illness after eating vegan food delivery service Daily Harvest’s French Lentil + Leek Crumbles dish, the meal service issued a recall of the dish on June 17, 2022.
Complaints of illness have included not only nausea and vomiting, but also severe and agonizing pain, and even organ damage, including to the liver and gallbladder. Complaints by consumers have included “extremely intense upper abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and fatigue,” that things “took a dark turn with the test results for my liver enzymes,” and “sick[ness] off and on for weeks.” Consumers have also expressed concern about as-yet unknown potential long-term effects, such as permanent liver damage.
On June 19, 2022, Daily Harvest issued the following statement: “We simultaneously launched an investigation with internal and external experts throughout our supply chain and in accordance with regulatory procedures. We will share more information as soon as it’s available.”
Then, in a direct-to-customer email, Daily Harvest reached out to patrons who had received the dish, urging them to dispose of it right away. The company also posted a link on Instagram to its June 22, 2022 statement with the caption, “An important message regarding our French Lentil + Leek Crumbles. Link in bio with details.” This resulted in a flurry of criticism as to why the company failed to include such critically important information directly in the post.
The company also offered refunds to anyone affected by the dish. This resulted in further criticism of the company, with victims demanding that the company compensate them and reimburse them for their medical bills, some in the thousands of dollars, rather than offer $10 refunds.
The corporation launched the dish on April 28, 2022, and it is unclear how long afterward it became aware of the product’s potential dangers.
