For over 35 years as an attorney, the only type of work I’ve done has been on behalf of plaintiffs, in an effort to get them compensated and help them get their lives back on track as best as possible. I’ve never represented an insurance company, and I’ve never represented any defendant. I’ve always worked for people.

I had one case in particular from about six years ago involving a family man, a father of two children, who was struck by a commercial vehicle. He was struck by a bus, and as a result he ultimately passed away after a short period of time. The doctors performed multiple operations to do their best to save him, but in the end he succumbed to his injuries. It was a very touching case because of the circumstances. He was a gentleman who had come to this country to make a better life, and he was doing that. He was coming home from work on a Friday night to see his family after a long, productive week, and he never made it home. I remember getting the phone call from a friend of the family. It was very shocking, both what had happened and what this young man had been going through.

My job was to represent the family’s legal interests in the best possible way, but at the same time to recognize that my job is not to sit behind a desk and wait to get a settlement check. My job is to guide a client, in this case a widow and her children, as best I could through a process that was foreign and very challenging for them as they tried to get their lives back on track. I remember that there were many moments through the litigation where I took care of them as if they were my family or relatives. I recognize that I don’t want to become so emotional that I can’t do my job as an attorney, so I’m able to separate that in a way that lets me still be effective. But I essentially hand-held these clients through the litigation process.

We settled this case during COVID, well in advance of trial, and it was one of the largest settlements in New York State that year. No matter how much money I was able to obtain for the family, and that particular case settled for $12 million, I was able to walk away knowing that this family will never worry about finances. Of course, I know they would give every penny back to get their loved one back, but that’s something I’m not able to do.

We can’t bring back a loved one who has been lost in an accident, and we can’t make an accident go away so that someone can live a life with no pain and no suffering. And when the black cloud of the lawsuit lifts off of them, they can know they were taken care of in the best way possible by their attorneys, so that they can have the best life possible going forward.
